Bohemian Prep Style Essentials

Striped Polo Ralph Lauren Shirt

Because one can never quite shake off your Prep school days. Polo Ralph Lauren pretty much fills your wardrobe and we LOVE Brooks Brothers though maybe can only afford Red Fleece. On top of your countless navy dresses you have an array of these shirts but the colour scheme remains consistent: navy, white, black, navy & white striped, red & white striped and possibly a pastel colour: pale yellow or baby pink. Naturally we all own one in baby blue. Other great places for basics: Hawes & Curtis for everyday shirts, A.P.C and Boden.

High waist Sailor Trousers

Stylish and oh so fiddly but soooo chic!
Continuing of with the sailor theme we do love our Breton Striped T-shirts. Summer holidays are likely to be coastal retreats in Newquay Cornwall; LA; South of France or really anywhere with a lovely sea view.

MICHAEL Michael Kors Jet Set Top-Zip Tote (Luggage)

So affordable, so chic and practical.
Only purchased in the colour “luggage.”

May pair with either Gucci loafers or Converse High Top Sneakers or white leather tennis shoes.

Perfume: Galop d’Hermès
Jeweller: None whatsoever
Nail Polish:  Mademoiselle by Essie

Bohemian Prep

You are most welcome to the Wonderful World of The Boh-Preps. A coddled Bohemia for bohemians with manners and literary leanings. Who have the bohemian spirit but lack the unruliness and obstreperous dispositions of bohemians of the past.

preppy hipster

This term is first seen in “The Preppy Handbook” by Lisa Birnbach. This term ironically merges the ‘traditional’ Bohemian as defined by Stover be it “errant spirits” with Birnbach’s concept of Bohemian Prep someone with a “freer spirit.”

Boh-Preps are likely to be named Catherine, Sophia (pronounced like sapphire) or Evelyn. Boys names ranging from Oliver, Sebastian and Jack. Sometimes after a flower like Violet or certain cities like Florence (because that is where Mummy was swept up by Daddy’s guitar-playing in a rustic barn-house restaurant in Tuscany where she was conceived.) Most decisions like spelling choices are dictated by literary heroes for instance it’s not boh-prep to name your son Alan it must be Allen after Ginsberg. Occasionally some odd-ball names like Franny and Zooey because of Salinger. (I really shouldn’t have to explain this to you.)

Likely to listen to Gainsbourg on Sunday afternoons. Not afraid to admit our shallow leanings and not everything we like has to be sophisticated we are dilettantes much like our cousins Nouveau Bohemians alas we do not necessarily have their funds. We may be as educated as Preppies though channel it into the arts and culture. Boh-Preps are unlikely to be doctors or engineers. Life’s too short to be conventional.

As cultured as we may be we are not materialistic because we adore Kerouac so much and are always a sucker for a Beat Bohemian. It’s not our fault those wayward bartenders-guitarist-starving artist types are so cute! Minimalism is likely to be a phase you have wandered into. Naturally, it didn’t last long as you have a fondness for antiques, flea markets and err… Rodeo Drive. We are a contradiction in terms.

We are likely to wear what can only be described as a Blue Shirt Lullaby. Pale blue shirt, skinny jeans navy or black with white tennis shoes and a Nehru Blazer (again navy or black.) Blazers are usually collarless because we like to be rebellious and it annoys our Preppy cousins! Both sexes will own and often wear a navy and white (breton) striped shirt.

We only wear cotton like our cousin The Preppies and like them share the ethos that style must be effortless and tailored.

If you’re a bit rebellious you’re likely to pop on your brown fedora.

Handbags are always tan leather.

Breton stripes are a wardrobe staple paired with a navy cardigan if its chilly. Sometimes sporting a beanie. Oooo especially if it has a fur pom pom! Long sleeved crew neck tops in winter in either navy, grey, white or black. With a long skirt, don’t be surprised if it’s down to the ankles we like to be covered up. Modesty is a style virtue. Men will pair up a long sleeved top or shirt with cinos in navy or beige. In the summer months we might wear a polo shirt, ladies wear with a long skirt, never with trousers.

We like to vacation by the sea, the only festivals we attend are literature one as music ones are too vulgar these days i.e. celebrity-filled thus attracting philistines. Hobbies include writing poetry and essays on obscure topics, painting, flirting with artists (or Professors), searching for first editions, gallivanting around European museums and making baklava from scratch.

Often found in the countryside on weekends picking wildflowers and petting squirrels, may stay in the city and hog a coffee table for half the day on their own or with loquacious pals. Typically has a longstanding artsy or community-based project to complete like a novel, learning braille or setting up a workshop series to help troubled teens heal through art.

Like our conformist cousins The Preppies we feel a great amount of duty and responsibility so are likely to volunteer in some capacity. Finally, like our 2nd cousins the Hippie’s we feel a desire to change the world in some small way.

Leave a comment if you are a Boh-Prep – we need to unite and connect our tribe!

The Bohemian Illustrator: Izak Zenou

Our Paris born illustrator Izak Zenou makes art that connects “through whims, charms, elegance, humor, surprise and coolness,” as he says.

I love Izak’s work especially his illustrations for the book Bohemian Manifesto. His work was my first introduction to the art form of illustration. It is undeniably the epitome of whimsical chic.

His clients include Henri Bendel, Bloomingdale’s alongside Chanel, Céline and Sephora. Chic with chic Darling!

Zenou was previously a Fashion designer then switched to Illustration because Darlings we Bohemians cannot commit to one form of art… So much talent why constrain ourselves?

He also illustrated Billy Joel’s Ode to NYC children’s book: “New York State of Mind and did the cover art for  Francesca Castagnoli’s novel: “Princess: You know who you are.”

Zenou’s top tip (as posted in JeffyBruce.blogspot.co.uk) on entering the creative arena:

“The advice I would give is believe in yourself, work hard and be patient.  You also have to engage in life and always stay in motion; keep moving forward.  Do what you are inspired to do and eventually, it will all work out.”

My first exposure to his work all began in the charming book Bohemian Manifesto: A Field Guide to Living on the Edge. Written by the Queen of Bohemia Laren Stover. Look out for the forthcoming updated edition of this book with more of his work in. I have been telepathically informed that new chapters are being typed by faeries’ feet as Laren dictates the words. Though Zenou continues with conventional methods to draw new illustrations.

“If I succeed somehow to put emotion in the eyes- I seduce myself. I’m touched, I’m moved and I’m happy with that.” – Izak

For the Fan Girls Zenou’s designs can be yours on Laptop sleeves, iPad and selected phone covers at DecalGirl.com/Izak.

Catherine’s debut poetry collection The Quarter Life Crisis Poet”

Here we have a collection of poems I wrote between 2010-2015. It’s essentially 25 years of my existence, much of it was filled with pain, disappointments and sorrow. Maybe you can relate? Out of despair, hope can return and happier days can appear. I hope these poems can make you feel less lonely about the pain we all feel inside. Even if you’re facing a Quarter Life Crisis know that you’re not the only one and you will come out of it stronger. *Hugs!* Join me on my journey….

So I was at Hay Festival and this lady wore a Sweater saying Gainsbourg is God and I thought… #BellaFreud #Ginsberg

DSC_1412

… Please God say it’s an imitation of Bella Freud’s Ginsberg is God sweater that I have coveted ever since I saw Kate Moss wear it in a ElleGirl 2003 magazine candid shot. The man next to her says “Oh I got this from Cos.” (Completely teasing me!) Then the lady answers: “It’s Bella Freud” and I’m like “Oh is it $300 bucks?” And she confirms it is meaning it’s the same designer and same price point that is well out of my reach because I am a mere Poet.

So here’s the jumper she was wearing…

[Discovering Serge Gainsbourg and Beat Bohemian Apparel]

If you’re a Rich Poet (total oxymoron) then like yeah… Go buy one here. Or if you’re a kind-hearted Poet/Artist/Nouveau Bohemian/Preppy Bohemian please do buy one for me! [Size XL, please message me on Facebook so you know where to post it.]

Evidently this is a nod to Serge Gainsbourg the French singer, painter and musician, who I would not have known the name of but for the Gainsbourg v Ginsberg Jumper probing at Hay. Naturally, I already recognised the sound of Gainsbourg’s music, I just didn’t know his name.

So have a listen.

So here it is in all its knitted literary splendor. I was actually imaging to wear this piece with black skinny jeans and white tennis shoes (to be an ironic Beatnik which is so not ‘Beat’ and the white tennis shoes is a bit Hipsterish but I secretly like it and would just end up Bohemianizing the whole look anyway.)

Regardless, Kate’s Look is sooo much better.

GINSBERG IS GOD
EAU DE PARFUM

£85.00

This unisex fragrance is inspired by Allen Ginsberg, the tousled headed poet surrounded by books and papers – the scent of green leaves and spring drifting in through the open windows. The heady scent is laced with notes of Frankincense, Wormwood and Leather with spicy hints of Black Pepper. Size: 50ml.

They also have candles and menswear (if I had a boyfriend I would soooo get him The Last Poets jumper even if he had a square job.)

Anyhoo, a bit more about Bella Freud. Yes, she’s the daughter of Lucian Freud and the grand-daughter of Sigmund Freud (the man that wrote an essay titled “Fetishism” and dribble-dabbled about “penis envy.”)

If you can’t get to her shop at 49 Chiltern Street, London then visit BellaFreud.com

If you’re lucky enough to be able to afford the sweater that I’ve always wanted since I was 13 then go show it off on instagram and tag her shop: @Bella_Freud

Bit of homework… You could watch this short film Bella wrote and directed and psychoanalyze it to Sigmund’s theories…

#Repost Hereford Indie Food Festival Bank Holiday Weekend

HFD Indie Food Leafy sign

As a Herefordshire Writer I feel one of the best features of this county is our food! We have so many great cafes and restauarants to choose from and it’s guaranteed to release the glutton in you. This Bank Holiday we had the pleasure of a foodie frenzy weekend by way of Hereford Indie Food Festival! This Festival celebrates Hereford’s Independent food culture and is formed by the team behind “A Rule of Tum” Jon Stead, Edwin and Dorian Kirk.

Hereford Indie Food is a community driven project celebrating the independent food scene, chefs, producers + makers in Herefordshire. -HerefordIndieFood.com

The Maker Markets lined the festival en route to the street food stalls. Visit NouveauBohemian.com to read more about some of the artists and designers showcasing their work. It’s such a lovely chance to get to know creatives in our county many of whom studied at Hereford College of Arts.

Queues abounded on The Shack Revolution’s pop-up cocktail stall. Many of you will be familiar with brothers James & Rich Manning who started The Shack Revolution bar located in Bastion mews. Their farm-made boutique and bespoke bars pop up everywhere around the country from Weddings, corporate events and even Wembley Stadium and football clubs! They also provided some live acts via their Shackoustic Sundays spot attached to their drinks booth.

Next time you’re on a night out in Hereford, visit their bar for pizza, beer or cocktails!

Coffee & Cafe stalls

The festival culminates into a Bohemian foray beginning with Makers Market stalls upon entry. Then as in a restaurant you are tempted with a starter: some nibbles (Goat’s cheese from Neal Yard’s Creamery?) and drinks from cider to cocktails. Finally you make your way through the leafy archway into the street food arena….

Haystack seating

There’s plenty of seating for all the family from haystacks to sofas!

Union Jack couch

Keg & Cork Bar

The outdoor dining areas had a wonderful communal feel and many visitors from outside our county had come over for Bank Holiday weekend.

I really wished I’d gotten The Chefs supper tickets at the Bookshop. Also I didn’t get around to staying on into the night so missed the music acts!

King Street Kitchen Team

As I have such a sweet tooth my first stop was at the King Street Kitchen stall where I purchased a salted pistachio brownie (made with coconut flour) and tried the gigantic chocolate, caramel and pretzel cake which was divine!

The Beefy Boys Stall

It was absolutely jam-packed and the unusually rainy weather couldn’t deter us from this gourmet gathering. All in all an excellently executed collection of music, food, fresh produce and creativity. It was a pleasure to be in attendance this year and I look forward to returning again next year!
